Horse and Donkey CAL Part 1

UPDATE: This CAL has ended, you can find their free pattern here!

Welcome to Part 1 of our Crochet Horse and Donkey CAL! I'm so excited you're here and joining in!

Today we will make the legs and body. The legs will be made separately and then joined together to make the body. By the end it will all be in one piece without any sewing required!

I'm so excited to see all of the colors you've picked out! And to see if you'll be making a horse, donkey or both! Or even a zebra or unicorn version, this pattern has many options!

If you are just learning about the CAL head over here to find out all the details, it's never too late to join in. Each part will remain free here on the blog so you crochet at your own pace.

Be sure to share your photos in the Grace and Yarn Crochet Group on Facebook, we'd love to see them. This is also a great place to ask any questions you have along the way!

Pattern

You can also find the full pattern (an ad-free PDF version) in my Etsy and Ravelry shop!

Some of you have shared that this will be your first CAL, yay! If you have any questions feel free to share them in the group or send me a message. I hope you enjoy making your own farm friend!

If amigurumi is new to you, I have a Tips to Learning Amigurumi page that I think will come in handy. I've also brought over some of the main tips below as a refresher if needed!

If you're ready for Part 1 now, feel free to scroll down. Otherwise, keep reading and I'll go through the materials and how to get started with a magic circle and color changes!

This CAL will be split into 3 parts:

Part 1 - March 1 - Legs and Body (this post here!)

  • 3.5mm crochet hook
  • 5.5mm crochet hook (this won't be needed until Part 3)
  • 15mm safety eyes
  • Scissors
  • Crochet or embroidery thread for eyelashes (optional)
  • Tapestry needle (I love the bent tips!)
  • Stuffing
  • Stitch markers (a piece of scrap yarn works great!)

Abbreviations (US Terminology)

MC- Magic circle

SC- Single crochet

SC INC- Single crochet increase

INV DEC- Invisible decrease

HDC- Half double crochet

HDC DEC – Half double crochet decrease

St(s)- Stitch(es)

If you are new to joining legs in amigurumi I have a step by step video tutorial for you in a left and right handed version!

Right Handed

Left Handed

(Below is a mini tutorial for making a magic circle, invisible decrease and invisible color join. Please note the photos are for reference and were taken from previous projects, the concept will be used for our CAL.)

Magic Circle

A magic circle (also called an adjustable loop) is the most common way to start amigurumi.

1. Leaving about a 4 inch tail wrap the yarn into a circle as in the photos below.

2. Hold the loop by placing your fingers over the part where the working yarn crosses over the tail.

3. Insert your hook into the circle, yarn over, pull through and chain 1.

4. You're magic circle is complete and ready to begin as pattern instructs (ex: if round says 6 SC you will complete 6 SC around the loop).

5. Pull your tail tight to close.

Invisible Decrease

This is the preferred way to decrease in amigurumi, it keeps the decrease tight and avoids the 'bump' of a regular SC decrease.

An invisible decrease happens over two stitches, insert your hook into the front loop of the first stitch and then into the front loop of the next stitch (you will have 3 loops on your hook), yarn over, pull through two loops (you will have 2 loops left on your hook), yarn over again and pull through all loops on the hook.

You're invisible decrease is done!

Invisible Color Join

When changing colors it can give a jagged look because we are working in rounds. This method will help the colors change more smoothly!

When you are completing the last stitch before you are instructed to change colors you will complete the first half of the stitch with your old color and finish the stitch with your new color.

Insert your hook into your stitch, yarn over with the old color and pull through, now drop your old color and use your new color to yarn over and finish the stitch by pulling through all loops on your hook.

You now have your new color on your hook, I like to tie off my old color here.

As you start your next round, complete the first stitch as a slip stitch instead of a SC. When you come back around to start your next round be sure to SC into your slip stitch just as you would a regular stitch.

Ready to start? Here we go!

Part 1

Legs and Body-

Legs: Make 2 – Using your accent color

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 SC

Round 2: SC INC in each st (12)

Round 3: SC in the first st, SC INC in the next, repeat around (18)

Round 4: SC in the first 2 sts, SC INC in the next, repeat around (24)

Rounds 5-9: SC around (24)

Change to white

Rounds 10-11: SC around (24)

Change to main body color

Rounds 12-21: SC around (24)

Fasten off (when you finish the 2nd leg do not fasten off, proceed to round 22) *Round 22 joins the legs together and starts the body.

Round 22: Chain 3 and attach to the first leg with a SC, SC in the remaining sts around the leg. When you reach the chain make a SC across each of the 3 chains, SC in the remaining sts of the next leg and SC across each of the 3 chains again. You will have crocheted on each side of the chain. (54 SC)

This completes your join and is where your next round will start.

Rounds 23-38: SC around (54)

Round 39: SC in the first 7 sts, INV DEC in the next, repeat around (48)

Round 40: SC around (48)

Round 41: SC in the first 6 sts, INV DEC in the next, repeat around (42)

Round 42: SC around (42)

Round 43: SC in the first 5 sts, INV DEC in the next, repeat around (36)

Round 44: SC around (36)

Round 45: SC in the first 4 sts, INV DEC in the next, repeat around (30)

Rounds 46-47: SC around (30)

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing

Part 1 is complete! I'll see you back on Monday for Part 2 where we'll make the head, ears and arms!

Crochet Horse and Donkey - A Free CAL

UPDATE: This CAL has now ended but you can still find their free pattern here!

Happy Friday everyone! I'm so excited for this CAL (crochet-a-long)! Making a horse and donkey has been on my list for awhile and I knew they would be a fun addition to the farm theme.

The pattern for both are practically the same. The only difference being colors used and the mane for the donkey is trimmed to be shorter!

If you've missed any of the other farm animals so far you can find them all below:

By changing the colors you could also have a super cute zebra or even add a horn for a unicorn. I love watching the personality of amaigurumi come together. This horse seems a little sassy and the donkey has a spunky attitude going on!

We will make these in 3 parts which I will go over below for you. Feel free to make one or both. While there are set days that each part will be released, you are welcome to crochet at your own pace. There is no date your creation has to be started or finished. Each part will remain on the blog as a free pattern!

Now for the details, plus some helpful tips if this is your first CAL!

What's a CAL (Crochet-a-long)?

It's a fun event where a group of crocheters come together and work on each part of the pattern together. This CAL will be in 3 parts, each being released a few days apart and is FREE here on the blog.

Where does it take place?

The best place is in the Grace and Yarn Crochet Group on Facebook!

With everyone being in different time zones and having different schedules everyone will be crocheting at different times. The group atmosphere allows you to share photos, comments, and questions whenever you'd like!

While the Facebook group is the easiest place to interact with others participating in the CAL, it's not necessary to join. You can also grab a friend to crochet each part together or work on your own as well.

If you prefer to work with an ad-free printable PDF version, one will be available in my Etsy and Ravelry shop starting on March 1st!

How do I find each part?

Each part will have it's own post here on the blog!

I will hyperlink each part below in this post, so feel free to PIN it here to save to your crochet board!

Each link will also be shared on the Grace and Yarn Facebook page and group page.

If you'd like the link sent straight to your inbox, you can sign up for my newsletter here! I'll keep you updated when new patterns are released so you won't miss them!

When will each part be posted?

The CAL will start on Friday March 1st and will have 3 parts.

Other Helpful Tips

If you are new to amigurumi, this is a great pattern to work on. I will break down each step and provide helpful photos along the way. Feel free to ask questions at any time!

Be sure to check out the Tips to Learning Amigurumi page as it will go over color changes, making magic circles and other tips to get you started!

If you'd prefer, you can use crocheted eyes as an alternative to the plastic safety eyes.

You're finished horse or donkey will measure about 14 inches tall, perfect size for cuddling!

Amigurumi Pig - A Free Crochet Pattern

Happy Friday everyone! I have a new addition to the farm collection that seems to be growing. I've been a little bit hooked on farm animals lately!

It's been awhile since making a larger amigurumi and I forgot how much fun and cuddly they are. So much so that I'm working on the next farm animal now, hoping to have it ready for you in a couple of weeks!

If you've missed any of the other animals in the farm theme you can find the link to their free pattern below!

You're finished pig will measure about 13 inches tall when using size 4 worsted weight yarn and a 3.5mm crochet hook. Because everyone crochets with a different tension, your pig may be slightly larger or smaller. Feel free to adjust your hook size to your tension.

If you feel you crochet loosely, try going down a size so your stitches are nice and tight (this will reduce the chance of your stuffing showing through). If you crochet tightly, move up a hook size to see how you like it!

For this pattern you will want to be familiar with making a magic circle, invisible decreases and color changes (although there are only a few!). If these are new methods to you, a mini tutorial for each can be found on the Tips to Learning Amigurumi page, complete with helpful photos along the way!

Be sure to also check out the Grace and Yarn Crochet Group on Facebook. Share your WIPs, ask questions and engage with others who love to crochet!

If you'd like to be notified when new patterns are released you can sign-up for my newsletter here! I'll keep you updated on new patterns, giveaways and tutorials as they're posted!

I've used plastic safety eyes for this pattern, if you would like to use an alternative these are my favorites!
