Crochet Lamb Headband - A Free Pattern

One of my goals for 2019 was to work through my stash inventory. Looking through my yarn and supplies I realized that I still had some headbands from our bunny pattern last year.

I also found a skein of Bernat Pipsqueak yarn in white. A lamb headband was meant to be!

This was my first time working with Pipsqueak yarn and at first I was not a fan. You can't see your stitches which made it a little bit hard to make sure my numbers were on track for each round.

About halfway through making the tube I started to enjoy it though. Using your fingertips to feel for each stitch definitely helps!

I still have more than half of my skein left so I may be brainstorming another pattern to use the rest up!

For this pattern I used a 1 inch wide (14 inches long) headband that I found at WalMart in the girls' department. They come in a 6 pack for just a few bucks! I also have some general instructions below if you're using a headband with a different length or width.

If you'd like to stay up to date on new patterns as they're released sign up for our newsletter here! Be sure to also join the Grace and Yarn Crochet Group on Facebook! It's a growing community where you can share your work and ask any questions you may have along the way!

Materials

US Abbreviations

MC- Magic circle

SC- Single crochet

SC INC- SC increase

INV DEC- Invisible decrease

HDC – Half double crochet

DC- Double crochet

Tr – Triple crochet

Sl st- Slip stitch

Ch - Chain

Note – When working with Pipsqueak yarn you will not be able to see your stitches, you will want to feel for the next stitch with your fingertips.

Headband

To make the headband we will be crocheting a tube and will not be joining each round. A stitch marker can be used to keep track of each round but is not necessary as we are going to make our tube the same length as our headband to insert.

For this pattern I have used a 1 inch thick headband that measures 14 inches long. If your headband is a different size, you will want to adjust your length (more or less rounds).

If you have a wider or narrower headband adjust the number of SC in the magic circle accordingly. Example, if your headband is wider try 12 SC, if your headband in narrower try 8 SC.

To start the headband make a magic circle with 10 SC, pull tight to close. You will want to tie a knot to secure your magic circle, this will prevent it from coming open once the headband is placed inside.

Continue to crochet in the round until you have reached your desired length. For reference, the headband above took approximately 73 rounds.

When your tube reaches the right length, insert your headband and sew closed. This is very similar to closing a hat or amigurumi. Weave your tapestry needle in and out of the remaining stitches until you reach your beginning stitch. Pull tight to close the circle and secure. Weave in your end.

Ears

Outer Ear

Make 2 with pipsqueak yarn

Round 1: Make a magic circle with 6 SC

Round 2: SC INC in each stitch (12)

Round 3: SC in the first stitch, SC INC in the next, repeat around (18)

Round 4: SC in the first 2 stitches, SC INC in the next, repeat around (24) Rounds 5-7: SC around (24)

Round 8: SC in the first 2 stitches, INV DEC in the next, repeat around (18) Rounds 9-11: SC around (18)

Fasten off leaving a long strand for sewing. Pinch to fold flat and bend the ends to fold in half. Sew across the top of the ear to keep its shape. This will create a rounded ear with an indentation as pictured below.

Inner Ear

Make 2 with pink

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 7 SC

Round 2: SC INC in the first 2 stitches, DC INC in the next 3 stitches, and SC INC into the last 2 stitches (14)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. With your needle sew your inner ears centered into the outer ears.

Flowers and Leaves

Large Flower – Make 3

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 SC, join with a slip stitch to the first SC

Round 2: Ch 1 (3 DC, ch 1, and sl st into the same stitch), in the next stitch complete *sl st, ch 1, 3 DC, ch 1, sl st*, repeat from * around. You will end with 6 petals.

Round 3: Ch 3 and sl st into the back post of the 3rd DC on your first petal, continue this step for each petal, when you reach the 6th petal sl st into the first ch 3.

Round 4: Ch 1 (4 DC, ch 1, and sl st into the chain), in the next chain complete *sl st, ch 1, 3 DC, ch 1, sl st*, repeat from * around. You will end with 6 petals.

Small Flower – Make 2

Chain 20

Row 1: HDC in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 2 and turn.

Row 2: Sl st into the first st, *ch 2, sl st in the next st*, *repeat across.

Fasten off leaving a tail. Starting with one end slowly roll your flower into a circle. Using your tail pass through the bottom to secure its shape.

Leaves – Make 4

Round 1: Complete the following inside of a magic circle; 2SC, 2HDC, 2DC, 2TR, Ch 1, 2TR, 2DC, 2HDC, 2SC. Pull tight to close and secure.

Assembly

1. Sew an ear onto each side of your headband.

2. Using your hot glue gun (or craft glue) attach each flower and leaf onto your headband. I used pins to help hold them in place. Once ready, I attached the pieces closest to the ears and worked my way to the middle flower.

Your headband is complete! I hope you have enjoyed making this pattern. If you've made a lamb headband share a picture with us, we'd love to see it!!

Amigurumi Horse and Donkey - A Free Crochet Pattern

Happy Monday everyone! I'm loving how the farm theme is slowly coming together! The addition of this horse and donkey really has me brainstorming on a goat and maybe some chicks!

These two come together rather quickly for their large size. By changing the colors you could also have a super cute zebra or even add a horn for a unicorn. I love watching the personality of amaigurumi come together. This horse seems a little sassy and the donkey has a spunky attitude going on!

If you've missed any of the other farm animals you can find them all below:

For this pattern you will want to be familiar with making a magic circle, invisible decreases and color changes (although there are only a few!). If these are new methods to you, a mini tutorial for each can be found on the Tips to Learning Amigurumi page, complete with helpful photos along the way!

Also included below is a step-by-step video tutorial for joining the legs (right and left handed version). You're finished farm animal will be approximately 14 inches tall!

Be sure to also check out the Grace and Yarn Crochet Group on Facebook. Share your WIPs, ask questions and engage with others who love to crochet!

If you'd like to be notified when new patterns are released you can sign-up for my newsletter here! I'll keep you updated on new patterns, giveaways and tutorials as they're posted!

I've used plastic safety eyes for this pattern, if you would like to use an alternative these are my favorites!

Pattern

  • 3.5 mm crochet hook
  • 5.5 mm crochet hook (for bandana)
  • 15mm safety eyes
  • Black crochet/embroidery thread for eyelashes (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle (I love the bent tips for amigurumi!)
  • Stuffing
  • Stitch markers (a piece of scrap yarn works great!)

Abbreviations: US terminology

MC- Magic circle

SC- Single crochet

SC INC- Single crochet increase

INV DEC- Invisible decrease

HDC- Half double crochet

HDC DEC – Half double crochet decrease

St(s)- Stitch(es)

*Slowly stuff as you go, you want it to be firm but not stretched. You will be working in the round, I like using a stitch marker at the beginning of each round.

You will use your 3.5mm crochet hook for each part of the pattern apart from the bandana, where we will use size 5.5mm

Instructions for the donkey and horse are the same. The difference between the two are the length of their mane.

2. When you reach the first corner chain 10 (if you crochet tightly you may want to add a few extra chains).

3. SC in the 2nd chain from your hook and back down the chain. SC across the bottom of the bandana.

4. When you reach the next corner chain 10 again (if you added chains above be sure to make this side with the same count). SC in the 2nd chain from your hook and in each chain back to the bandana. SC across the last remaining side. At this point you will have crocheted across all 3 sides and have created 2 ties on either side.

Weave in your ends.

Assembly

1. I found it easiest to complete the mane once the head was sewn onto the body. Be sure to keep your facial features centered and continue to stuff the neck before closing. This will help ensure a strong neck.

2. Next, sew the arms onto the body centered with the head at round 46.

Mane

With your accent color cut multiple strips of yarn approximately 9 inches long for the horse and 7 inches for the donkey. You will need quite a few to fill in the mane.

- Taking 2 strands at a time and using your crochet hook, pull the strands through a stitch next to one of the ears to create a loop (picture 1).

- Next, pull your ends through the loop (picture 2) and pull tight (picture 3).

- Complete this step across the head to the other ear (picture 4).

Continue these steps to create extra rows working down the back of the head.

Donkey – Trim your mane to be approximately 2-3 inches long.

Horse – Trim as needed/ to your liking.

Tail

With accent color cut 9 strips of yarn approximately 15 inches long. In similar fashion to our mane pull the loops of your strands through two stitches in the back of your horse/donkey. Pull the strand through your loop and pull tight. Trim your tail as desired, I kept mine about 2-3 inches long.

Lastly, tie your bandana around the neck and your horse and donkey are complete! I hope you have enjoyed making this pattern. Let me know if you have any questions with this pattern or any of my other patterns, I would be happy to help.

Thank you,
Stephanie

Mini Crochet Berry Patch Bunnies - Part 2

Welcome to Part 2 of our Mini Berry Patch Bunny CAL! I love all of the colors I'm seeing in the group and now it's time to add our final features.

These two have me thinking of Spring and flowers blooming with bright and bold colors! While we're coming in close to Easter I love bunnies year round and plan to make some more (my girls have claimed these) to put on my desk!

Today we will make the ears, arms and straps! One of my favorite parts about this pattern is that the ears and arms are the only portion we need to sew.

I have some tips below on my favorite ways to attach them on, plus a video tutorial!

Most of my ears and arms are either sewn closed or I use a few single crochets across the top to close them. I like this method as it ensures it is closed and no stuffing will come out if a stitch is missed when sewing. I also like that it provides a stitch or portion to sew through for quick and easy assembly!

The bib and straps are made right on the bunny and no sewing will be needed, just a few weaving of ends. Remember our round of using the back loops only in Part 1? We will be using a few of the front loops that are remaining to make our bib!

If you are just joining in or learning about the CAL it's not too late to start! You can find all of the details about the CAL and link to Part 1 here! Each part will remain free here on the blog so you can crochet at your own pace.

Pattern

You can also find the full pattern (an ad-free PDF version) in my Etsy and Ravelry shop!

This CAL will be split into 2 parts:

Part 2 - April 8 - Ears, Arms and Straps (this post here!)

Part 2

Ears- Make 2

With body color

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 7 SC

Rounds 2-3: SC around (7)

Round 4: SC INC in each st around (14)

Rounds 5-9: SC around (14)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing, fold ear in half and sew across to close the ear as pictured.

Arms- Make 2 stuffing lightly at the bottom

With body color

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 SC

Round 2: SC in the first st, SC INC in the next, repeat around (9)

Rounds 3-5: SC around (9)

Change to shirt color

Rounds 6-11: SC around (9)

At the end of round 11 pinch the arm flat and make 4 SC across the top to close, fasten off and leave a long tail to sew onto the body.

Bow –

Working in a magic circle make 5 DCs, slip stitch, 5 DCs, and slip stitch again, pull your string tight and wrap it around the middle of the bow 4 times. Tie/secure in the back and cut your string leaving a long section to sew with.

Attaching everything together-

(Note – We will sew our parts together and then make the bib and straps for the overalls.)

- First, sew the ears onto the head starting at the 4th round and ending around the 6th round. My favorite way to sew on ears is to use a pin to hold them in place and then passing my needle through a stitch on the head I'll go through the bottom portion of my ear.

Once through I'll pick up another stitch on the head to pass through and pull tight. Continue this process until you feel your ears are on and secure. Give them a gentle pull to see if there are any places that were missed or could use another pass through. For extra strength feel free to go around a 2nd time!

- Next, sew the arms on the body centered with the head at round 29. I like to use the whip stitch for my arms. Once you have them pinned or placed where you would like, insert your needle into a stitch on your bunny (aiming for the last row of your shirt color) and then into the first top stitch on your arm.

Continue this process until your arm is completely attached, again feel free to go back through a 2nd time for extra strength.

- Lastly, for the girl version sew the bow onto the desired ear.

Overall Bib and Straps –

To make this last part we will be attaching and crocheting along some of the front loops from round 24. No sewing will be needed for this portion.

1. With overall color make a slip knot and attach with a slip stitch to one of the front loops from round 24. We will be using the center 8 stitches for our bib portion. I used the mouth to help me find the center and counted out a few stitches on each side to find my 8 middle stitches.

2. Ch 1 and make 8 HDC across (one in each stitch for 8 stitches) (8)

Ch 1 and turn, we will now work across in rows. (Turning your bunny upside down or right side up with each row will help in easily reaching your stitches, find what’s comfortable for you.)

3. HDC across, ch 1 and turn (8)

4. HDC across (8) Once you complete this row, do not fasten off. Make a chain long enough to reach across the back to the opposite side (the straps will make an ‘x’ when complete) and slip stitch into a front loop from round 24. Our tension may be different, and the amount of chains needed to reach the other side may differ, for reference I chained 17. Fasten off and weave in your end.

5. Create a slip knot and attach with a slip stitch to the other (front) side of your bib. Make a chain with the same amount as the first and attach with a slip stitch to the back as before. Fasten off and weave in your ends.

Mini Crochet Berry Patch Bunnies - Part 1

Welcome to Part 1 of our Spring CAL (crochet-a-long)! I'm so excited you're here and joining in to make these sweet Mini Berry Patch Bunnies!

Today we will make the legs, body and head. The legs will be made separately and then joined together to make the body and head. By the time we're done it will all be one piece. No sewing required for Part 1, yes!

If you are just learning about the CAL head over here to find out all the details, it's never too late to join in. Each part will remain free here on the blog so you can crochet at any pace.

Be sure to share your photos in the Grace and Yarn Crochet Group on Facebook, we'd love to see your mini bunnies! This is also a great place to ask any questions you have along the way!

Pattern

You can also find the full pattern (an ad-free PDF version) in my Etsy and Ravelry shop!

Some of you have shared that this will be your first CAL, yay! If you have any questions feel free to share them in the group or send me a message. I hope you enjoy making your own mini bunny!

If amigurumi is new to you, I have a Tips to Learning Amigurumi page that I think will come in handy. I've also brought over some of the main tips below as a refresher if needed!

If you're ready for Part 1 now, feel free to scroll down. Otherwise, keep reading and I'll go through the materials and how to get started with a magic circle and color changes!

This CAL will be split into 2 parts:

Part 1 - April 5 - Legs, Body and Head (this post here!)

  • Stuffing
  • Stitch markers (a piece of scrap yarn can do the trick!)
Abbreviations (US terminology)

MC- Magic circle

SC- Single crochet

SC INC- Single crochet increase

INV DEC- Invisible decrease

HDC – Half double crochet

St(s)- Stitch(es)

For extra tips I have a right and left handed video tutorial to walk you through joining the legs and adding your facial features!

Right Handed Tutorial

Left Handed Tutorial

(Below is a mini tutorial for making a magic circle, invisible decrease and invisible color join. Please note the photos are for reference and were taken from previous projects, the concept will be used for our CAL.)

Magic Circle

A magic circle (also called an adjustable loop) is the most common way to start amigurumi.

1. Leaving about a 4 inch tail wrap the yarn into a circle as in the photos below.

2. Hold the loop by placing your fingers over the part where the working yarn crosses over the tail.

3. Insert your hook into the circle, yarn over, pull through and chain 1.

4. You're magic circle is complete and ready to begin as pattern instructs (ex: if round says 6 SC you will complete 6 SC around the loop).

5. Pull your tail tight to close.

Invisible Decrease

This is the preferred way to decrease in amigurumi, it keeps the decrease tight and avoids the 'bump' of a regular SC decrease.

An invisible decrease happens over two stitches, insert your hook into the front loop of the first stitch and then into the front loop of the next stitch (you will have 3 loops on your hook), yarn over, pull through two loops (you will have 2 loops left on your hook), yarn over again and pull through all loops on the hook.

You're invisible decrease is done!

Invisible Color Join

When changing colors it can give a jagged look because we are working in rounds. This method will help the colors change more smoothly!

When you are completing the last stitch before you are instructed to change colors you will complete the first half of the stitch with your old color and finish the stitch with your new color.

Insert your hook into your stitch, yarn over with the old color and pull through, now drop your old color and use your new color to yarn over and finish the stitch by pulling through all loops on your hook.

You now have your new color on your hook, I like to tie off my old color here.

As you start your next round, complete the first stitch as a slip stitch instead of a SC. When you come back around to start your next round be sure to SC into your slip stitch just as you would a regular stitch.

Ready to start? Here we go!

Part 1

Legs and Body-

Legs - Make 2 – Starting with body color

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 SC

Round 2: SC INC in each st (12)

Round 3: SC in the first st, SC INC in the next, repeat around (18)

Round 4: SC in the first 2 sts, SC INC in the next, repeat around (24)

Round 5: SC around in the back loops only (24)

Round 6: SC around (24)

Round 7: SC in the first 6 sts, INV DEC 6 times, SC in the last 6 sts (18)

Round 8: SC in the first 3 sts, INV DEC 6 times, SC in the last 3 sts (12)

Change to overall color

Rounds 9-16: SC around (12)

Fasten off on the first leg only. When you finish the 2nd leg, make a SC into each of the next 5 stitches (do not fasten off). This will line up your working yarn to be in the center of the leg for our join as well as ensuring both feet will be facing forward.

Round 17: Chain 3 and attach to the first leg with a SC (make sure that both feet are facing forward). SC in the remaining sts around the leg. When you reach the chain make a SC across each of the 3 chains, SC in the remaining sts of the next leg and SC across each of the 3 chains again. You will have crocheted on each side of the chain. (30 SC) This completes your join and is where your next round will start.

Rounds 18-23 SC around (30)

Change to shirt color

Round 24: SC around in the back loop only (30)

Rounds 25-27: SC around (30)

Round 28: SC in the first 3 sts, INV DEC in the next, repeat around (24)

Round 29: SC in the first 2 sts, INV DEC in the next, repeat around (18)

Change to body color

Round 30: SC around (18)

Round 31: SC in the first st, INV DEC in the next, repeat around (12)

Round 32: SC around (12)

(Here is where we will start the head.)

Round 33: SC in the first st, SC INC in the next, repeat around (18)

Round 34: SC in the first 2 sts, SC INC in the next, repeat around (24)

Round 35: SC in the first 3 sts, SC INC in the next, repeat around (30)

Round 36: SC in the first 4 sts, SC INC in the next, repeat around (36)

Round 37: SC in the first 11 sts, SC INC in the next, repeat around (39)

Rounds 38-42: SC around (39)

NOTE: Here is where we will attach the facial features. Place the safety eyes 5 stitches apart between rounds 40 and 41. (For the girl version, I recommend sewing on the eyelashes before securing your safety eyes).

Nose/Mouth: Using embroidery thread place the nose centered towards the bottom row of your eyes, 1 stitch in on each side (this will leave 3 stitches in the middle and this is what you will pass your thread through to create the nose). Pass your thread through 5-6 times (or as many as you would like for a thinner or wider nose). Use your thread to make a straight line down 2 rows and then a ‘V’ for the smile.

Round 43: SC in the first 11 sts, INV DEC in the next, repeat around (36)

Round 44: SC in the first 4 sts, INV DEC in the next, repeat around (30)

Round 45: SC in the first 3 sts, INV DEC in the next, repeat around (24)

*Continue to stuff the head and neck firmly to avoid a wobbly head*

Round 46: SC in the first 2 sts, INV DEC in the next, repeat around (18)

Round 47: SC in the first stitch, INV DEC in the next, repeat around (12)

Round 48: INV DEC around (6)

Fasten off and sew remaining part closed, weave in your end.
