Mini Berry Patch Bunnies - A Free Crochet-A-Long

Happy Friday everyone! I'm so excited for our Spring CAL (crochet-a-long)! They have me thinking of the bright, bold and beautiful colors of Spring!

The Berry Patch Bunnies have been one of my favorite patterns to date and when brainstorming for our Spring CAL I knew we had to have a mini version!

These wee little ones measure about 8 inches tall, almost half the size of their larger versions. If you missed them last year you can find the girl version here and the boy here!

Since they have a nice small size I kept the legs, body and head as one piece. Very similar to the other minis on the blog with the exception of keeping the formed feet. I love the extra detail it adds!

Getting the proportions just right for this pattern was fun and frustrating at the same time! It created a challenge that I enjoyed and on the 5th go we had a winner!

It's always important to me for your creations to last. The main problem I had was making the head just a little bit bigger to be in proportion with those cute little feet I liked so much. But, by making the head larger it cause the neck to be more wobbly than I'd like.

On the 2nd try I widen the neck but the proportions just didn't look right. 3rd try was shorter body, narrow neck and smaller head. Still didn't have it!

In the end I kept the neck narrow and went for the middle size on the head. I felt like Goldilocks and cut the increase count in the middle. Whew! It was finally looking right.

These are the patterns that I usually end up enjoying the most, even if they were more troublesome than others!

Your neck should be nice and strong and last for hours of play. Tight stitches and firm stuffing will help ensure its stability. While I've used a 3.5mm hook for this pattern it's definitely negotiable!

Everyone crochets with a different tension and the hook you want to use for amigurumi can vary. If you've made amigurumi before chances are you have your favorite go to hook and are ready! If you're new to amigurumi try a small part to crochet and get a feel for how loose or tight your tension is.

Start with the 3.5mm hook (or a similar size if you don't have one on hand), if your stitches are so tight you have trouble getting your hook in you want to go up in size (try half a size at a time until you find what works for you). If your stitches are very loose you will want to go down in size.

Tight stitches help your amigurumi to be strong structurally and help reduce the chance of your stuffing showing through.

Keep in mind if you do end up using a different size hook your finished bunny may be slightly smaller or bigger depending on the size and your tension.

We will make these in 2 parts which I will go over below. While there are set days that each part will be released, you are welcome to crochet at your own pace. There is no date your creation has to be started or finished. Each part will remain on the blog as a free pattern!

What's a CAL (Crochet-a-long)?

A CAL is a fun event where a group of crocheters come together and work on each part of the pattern together. This CAL will be split into 2 parts and is FREE here on the blog.

Where does it take place?

The best place is in the Grace and Yarn Crochet Group on Facebook!

With everyone being in different time zones and having different schedules everyone will be crocheting at different times. The group atmosphere allows you to share photos, comments, and questions whenever you'd like!

While the Facebook group is the easiest place to interact with others participating in the CAL, it's not necessary to join. You can also grab a friend to crochet each part together or work on your own as well.

If you prefer to work with an ad-free printable PDF version, one will be available in my Etsy and Ravelry shop starting on April 5th!

How do I find each part?

Each part will have it's own post here on the blog!

I will hyperlink each part below in this post, so feel free to PIN it here to save to your crochet board!

Each link will also be shared on the Grace and Yarn Facebook page and group page.

If you'd like the link sent straight to your inbox, you can sign up for my newsletter here! I'll also keep you updated when new patterns are released so you won't miss them!

When will each part be posted?

The CAL will start on Friday April 5th and will have 2 parts.

Other Helpful Tips

If you are new to amigurumi, this is a great pattern to work on. I will break down each step and provide helpful photos along the way. Feel free to ask questions at any time!

Be sure to check out the Tips to Learning Amigurumi page as it will go over color changes, making magic circles and other tips to get you started!

If you'd prefer, you can use crocheted eyes as an alternative to the plastic safety eyes.

You're finished mini bunny will measure about 8 inches tall, perfect size for cuddling!

Free Crochet Chick Pillow Pattern

Is it Spring yet? I have to confess it is my FAVORITE season of all! I am very blessed to live in an area where we have all 4 beautiful seasons. While I enjoy them all, Spring is full of my favorite bright colors and blooms.

It's a little glimpse of the warm weather that's to come. We've had an unusual amount of snow for our area in the last two weeks, it was fun at first (only because I didn't have to drive in it, complete chicken here!). But now after week two I'm ready for some sunshine.

This pillow jumped on my hook for two reasons. One, to cheer me up with that cozy bright yellow. Two, to work on one of my goals that I shared with you earlier in the year. To work through my inventory of yarn and pillow forms (how I ended up with 2 round and 4 rectangular pillows with no project in mind is beyond me!).

(This means I still have one more round pillow form. What would you like to see a pattern for? Let me know below in the comments what you think it should be!)

I used pink cheeks for my pattern but this pillow would also be super cute with red cheeks! This pillow works up quite quickly and is the type of project you can do while watching your favorite movie. Most stitches are in continuous rounds with easy repeats.

For this pattern you will want to be familiar with working in a magic circle. If this is new to you I have a tutorial below to walk you through it!

I also wanted to share that March brings a couple of super fun celebrations! First, it's National Crochet Month (anyone else celebrate this year round?), it's also my birthday month and it has officially been 1 year since the launch of this blog! I can't believe how fast 1 year has gone by!

I want to thank each of you for making this such a fun year, your encouragement and support has been beyond amazing! You rock! Stay tuned for a fun a giveaway in the next few weeks to celebrate you, I'll be sharing it here on my Facebook page!

Be sure to also check out the Grace and Yarn Crochet Group on Facebook, this is a great place to share your WIPs, ask questions and engage with others who love to crochet!

If you'd like to be notified when new patterns are released you can sign-up for my newsletter here! I'll keep you updated on new patterns, giveaways and tutorials as they're posted!

Assembly –

1. Sew your eyes, cheeks and beak onto one of your pillow covers. Optional: Use sewing pins to help hold them in place.

2. Place both covers with wrong sides together. SC around the edge making sure to go through each cover. When you are halfway across, insert your pillow form (or stuffing) and continue to SC around the remaining half. Fasten off and weave in your end. Horse and Donkey CAL Part 3

UPDATE: This CAL has ended, you can find their free pattern here!

We are so close to finishing our farm friends! I love seeing all of your creations in the group! Each has their own personality and your color combinations are so fun to look through!

Today we will be making the bandana, mane and tail. Plus, we will sew our pieces together!

If you are just joining in, it's not too late to start! Each part will remain free here on the blog so feel free to crochet at your own pace. You can find all of the details and links to each part here!

This CAL consists of 3 parts:

Part 3 - March 6 - Bandana, Mane and Tail (this post here!)

Pattern

The full pattern is also available in an ad-free printable version in my Etsy or Ravelry shop!

You may make and sell items made from this pattern but please do not sell, share or reproduce the actual pattern. If you sell finished items online (Etsy, etc) please provide a link to the pattern and credit to me as the designer, thank you. I hope you enjoy this pattern!

Part 3

Bandana –

With your 5.5mm hook and color of choice, chain 21

Row 1: HDC in the 2nd chain from your hook and in each chain across, chain 1 and turn (20)

Row 2: HDC DEC, 16 HDC, HDC DEC, chain 1 and turn (18)

Row 3: HDC DEC, 14 HDC, HDC DEC, chain 1 and turn (16)

Row 4: HDC DEC, 12 HDC, HDC DEC, chain 1 and turn (14)

Row 5: HDC DEC, 10 HDC, HDC DEC, chain 1 and turn (12)

Row 6: HDC DEC, 8 HDC, HDC DEC, chain 1 and turn (10)

Row 7: HDC DEC, 6 HDC, HDC DEC, chain 1 and turn (8)

Row 8: HDC DEC, 4 HDC, HDC DEC, chain 1 and turn (6)

Row 9: HDC DEC, 2 HDC, HDC DEC, chain 1 and turn (4)

Row 10: HDC DEC twice, chain 1 and turn (2)

Row 11: HDC DEC (1)

Border-

1. Chain 1 and SC down the side.

2. When you reach the first corner chain 10 (add a few extra chains if you crochet tightly).

3. SC in the 2nd chain from your hook and back down the chain. SC across the bottom of the bandana.

4. When you reach the next corner chain 10 again (if you added a few chains above be sure to chain the same amount here). SC in the 2nd chain from your hook and in each chain back to the bandana. SC across the last remaining side. At this point you will have crocheted across all 3 sides and have created 2 ties on either side.

Weave in your ends.

Assembly –

1. I found it easiest to complete the mane once the head was sewn onto the body. Be sure to keep your facial features centered and continue to stuff the neck before closing. This will help ensure a strong neck.

TIP - I like to place the head onto the neck to see where I want to place it. Making a mental note of which round I'll follow as I sew. Using stitch markers (long sewing pins or safety pins will work too), place a few around to hold the head in place.

(Here's a picture for reference from the Berry Patch Bunny pattern)

2. Next, sew the arms onto the body centered with the head at round 46.

Mane –

With your accent color cut multiple strips of yarn approximately 9 inches long for the horse and 7 inches long for the donkey. You will need quite a few to fill in the mane.

- Taking 2 strands at a time and using your crochet hook, pull the strands through a stitch next to one of the ears to create a loop (picture 1).

- Next, pull your ends through the loop (picture 2) and pull tight (picture 3).

- Complete this step across the head to the other ear (picture 4).

Continue these steps to create extra rows working down the back of the head.

Donkey – Trim your mane to be approximately 2-3 inches long.

Horse – Trim as needed/ to your liking.

Tail –

With accent color cut 9 strips of yarn approximately 15 inches long. In similar fashion to our mane pull the loops of your strands through two stitches on the back of your horse/donkey. Pull the strands through your loop and pull tight. Trim your tail as desired, I kept mine about 2-3 inches long.

Lastly, tie your bandana around the neck and your horse and donkey are complete! Thank you so much for joining in on this CAL, I hope you had fun along the way!

Want to add a little extra detail to your farm friend? The bow/bow tie from The Berry Patch Bunny would be super cute! The small flower from this tutorial would also make a nice accessory!
