Amigurumi Moose CAL Part 3

We are so close to finishing our Amigurumi Moose CAL and oh my cuteness I love seeing all of them!

Today we will be making the arms, scarf for Miles, and the final assembly. While I made a scarf for Miles I think he would also be super handsome with a bow tie, like the one used in the Berry Patch Bunny pattern!

For part 3 we will use our 3.5mm hook for the arms. If you're making Miles or want to make a scarf for Millie we will be using our 5mm hook.

Arms

Make 2 lightly stuffing bottom half

With dark brown

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 SC

Round 2: SC INC in each stitch around (12)

Round 3: SC in the first 3 sts, SC INC in the next, rep around (15)

Rounds 4-5: SC around (15)

Round 6: SC in the first st, INV DEC in the next, rep around (10)

Change to shirt color

Rounds 7-20: SC around (10)

At the end of round 20 pinch the arm flat and make 5 SC across the top to close, fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Scarf -

With color of choice and 5mm hook, chain 60

Row 1: HDC in the 2nd chain from your hook and in each chain across (59)

Row 2-3: HDC across (59)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Assembly -

1. Sew the head onto the body, making sure to have the facial features centered. Be sure to add stuffing as you go to keep the neck firm, this will help avoid a floppy head.

2. Next, sew the arms onto the body centered with the head at round 44.

3. If you have made a scarf, fold or tie around the neck and you are done!

Welcome to Part 2 of our Amigurumi Moose CAL! I love all of the colors I'm seeing in the group and now it's time to add a head.

Today we will make the head, nose, ears and antlers! Plus the little bow for Millie. 

Feel free to add your own personalities by adding eyelashes, eyebrows or smiles as you'd like!

For this pattern I have used 12mm plastic safety eyes. If you don't have these on hand or prefer to make crocheted eyes instead, I have a tutorial on making them with crochet thread here!

Part 2

Nose

With light brown

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 SC

Round 2: SC INC in each st (12)

Round 3: SC in the first st, SC INC in the next, rep around (18)

Round 4: SC in the first 2 sts, SC INC in the next, rep around (24)


Round 5: SC in the first 3 sts, SC INC in the next, rep around (30)

Rounds 6-9: SC around (30)

Round 10: SC in the first 3 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (24)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing

Head

With light brown

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 SC

Round 2: SC INC in each st (12)

Round 3: SC in the first st, SC INC in the next, rep around (18)

Round 4: SC in the first 2 sts, SC INC in the next, rep around (24)

Round 5: SC in the first 3 sts, SC INC in the next, rep around (30)

Round 6: SC in the first 4 sts, SC INC in the next, rep around (36)

Note: Here is where we will add the eyes and nose before we start closing the head.

Insert the eyes between rounds 15 and 16, 8 stitches apart. Feel free to add eyelashes before securing your eyes.

Sew the nose centered between the eyes, stuffing as you go.

Round 19: SC in the first 7 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (48)

Round 20: SC in the first 6 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (42)

Round 21: SC in the first 5 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (36)

Round 22: SC in the first 4 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (30)

Round 23: SC in the first 3 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (24)

Round 24: SC in the first 2 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (18)

Round 25: SC in the first st, INV DEC in the next, rep around (12)

Round 26: INV DEC around (6)

Fasten off and sew remaining part closed, weave in your end.

Ears

Make two with light brown

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 SC

Round 2: SC INC in each st around (12)

Round 3: SC in the first st, SC INC in the next, rep around (18)

Rounds 4-5: SC around (18)

Round 6: SC in the first st, INV DEC in the next, rep around (12)

Rounds 7-8: SC around (12)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. Using part of the tail fold the ear in half and sew across the top to create a fold in the ear, be sure to leave enough tail to use sew onto the head.

Antlers

Make 2 

Note for the antlers: I left mine unstuffed. Each antler will consist of two pieces joined together, very similar to our joining of the legs in Part 1.

With ivory

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 SC

Round 2: SC INC in each st (12)

Rounds 3-6: SC around (12)

Fasten off and make one more piece by repeating rounds 1-6, do not fasten off on the 2nd piece.

Round 7: We will join these two pieces and continue the antler. Join with a SC to the first piece and SC around both pieces (unlike the legs we will not be using a chain to connect the two) (24)

Round 8: SC in the first 2 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (18)

Round 9: SC around (18)

Round 10: SC in the first st, INV DEC in the next, rep around (12)

Rounds 11-12: SC around (12)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. This completes one antler, repeat rounds 1-12 for the 2nd antler.

Bow (for Millie)

Working in a magic circle make 4 DC, slip stitch, 4 DC and slip stitch again. Pull your string tight and wrap it around the middle of the bow 3-4 times. Tie/secure in the back and cut your string leaving a long section to sew with.

Assembling the Head

1. Sew the antlers onto the head starting at the 5th round and ending at the 9th round on each side.

2. Sew the ears on just below the antlers.

3. If you're making Millie attach your bow onto the desired side.

We're done with Part 2 and over halfway done making our moose!

Welcome to Part 1 of  the Amigurumi Moose CAL! I'm so excited you're here and joining in!

Today we will make the legs and body, the legs will be made separately and then joined together to make the body. By the end it will all be in one piece without any sewing needed!

Feel free to make Miles, Millie or both! I'm so excited to see all of the colors you've picked out!

Materials

• Size 4 worsted weight yarn (50g color of choice for shirt and pants; 50g light brown; small amount of dark brown, ivory and color of choice for bow/scarf)
• 3.5mm crochet hook
• 5mm crochet hook (this won't be needed until Part 3)
• 12mm safety eyes
• Scissors
• Crochet or embroidery thread for eyelashes (optional)
• Tapestry needle (I love the bent tips!)
• Stuffing
• Stitch markers (a piece of scrap yarn works great!)

Abbreviations (US Terminology)

SC - Single crochet

SC INC - Single crochet increase

INV DEC - Invisible decrease

HDC - Half double crochet

DC - Double crochet

St(s) - Stitch(es)

Rep - Repeat

(Below is a mini tutorial for making a magic circle, invisible decrease and invisible color join. Please note the photos are for reference and were taken from previous projects, the concept will be used for our CAL.)

Magic Circle

A magic circle (also called an adjustable loop) is the most common way to start amigurumi.

1. Leaving about a 4 inch tail wrap the yarn into a circle as in the photos below.

2. Hold the loop by placing your fingers over the part where the working yarn crosses over the tail.

3. Insert your hook into the circle, yarn over, pull through and chain 1.

4. You're magic circle is complete and ready to begin as pattern instructs (ex: if round says 6 SC you will complete 6 SC around the loop).

5. Pull your tail tight to close.

Invisible Decrease

This is the preferred way to decrease in amigurumi, it keeps the decrease tight and avoids the 'bump' of a regular SC decrease.

An invisible decrease happens over two stitches, insert your hook into the front loop of the first stitch and then into the front loop of the next stitch (you will have 3 loops on your hook), yarn over, pull through two loops (you will have 2 loops left on your hook), yarn over again and pull through all loops on the hook.

You're invisible decrease is done!

Invisible Color Join

When changing colors it can give a jagged look because we are working in rounds. This method will help the colors change more smoothly!

When you are completing the last stitch before you are instructed to change colors you will complete the first half of the stitch with your old color and finish the stitch with your new color.

Insert your hook into your stitch, yarn over with the old color and pull through, now drop your old color and use your new color to yarn over and finish the stitch by pulling through all loops on your hook.

You now have your new color on your hook, I like to tie off my old color here.

As you start your next round, complete the first stitch as a slip stitch instead of a SC. When you come back around to start your next round be sure to SC into your slip stitch just as you would a regular stitch.

Ready to start? Here we go!

Part 1

Legs and Body - 

Make 2: Starting with dark brown

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 SC

Round 2: SC INC in each st (12)

Round 3: SC in the first st, SC INC in the next, rep around (18)

Round 4: SC in the first 2 sts, SC INC in the next, rep around (24)

Round 5: SC in the first 3 sts, SC INC in the next, rep around (30)

Round 6: SC around in the back loops only (30)

Rounds 7-8: SC around (30)

Round 9: SC in the first 9 sts, INV DEC 6 times, SC in the last 9 sts (24)

Round 10: SC in the first 6 sts, INV DEC 6 times, SC in the last 6 sts (18)

Change to pant color

Rounds 11-23: SC around (18)

Fasten off on the first leg only. At the end of Round 23 on the 2nd leg, complete a SC in each of the next 7 stitches (this will line up our feet to be straight when we join).

Round 24: Chain 3 and attach to the first leg with a SC (make sure both feet are facing the same direction), SC in the remaining stitches around the leg. When you reach the chain make a SC across each of the 3 chains, SC in the remaining stitches of the next leg and SC across each of the 3 chains again (you will have SC on both sides of the 3 chains now) (42) This completes your join and is where your next round will start.

*Note - Joining the legs can be the hardest part of the pattern but I promise once you have it down it will come second nature the next time you do it. We are using the chain 3 as a bridge to join the legs into one piece.*

Rounds 25-30: SC around (42)

Change to shirt color

Round 31: SC around (42)

Round 32: SC in the back loops only (42)

Rounds 33-41: SC around (42)

Round 42: SC in the first 5 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (36)

Round 43: SC in the first 4 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (30)

Round 44: SC around (30)

Change to light brown

Round 45: SC in the first 3 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (24)

Rounds 46-48: SC around (24)

Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing

If you are only making the boy version you are done with Part 1! If you are making the girl version follow below to add the ruffled edge to her shirt. 

Ruffled Edge (for Millie)

Holding your moose with her feet away from you (see picture below) attach with a slip stitch to one of the front loops from round 32. (For a cleaner look attach at the back of the body.)

Round 1: Ch 1, 2DC in the same stitch and in each st around, join with a slip stitch to the first DC (84)

Rounds 2-3: Ch 1, DC in each st around, join with a slip stitch to the first DC (84)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

You are all set and ready for Part 2, where we'll make the head, ears and antlers! I hope you all have a great weekend!

Mini Amigurumi Christmas Tree - A Free Crochet Pattern

These Mini Amigurumi Christmas Trees are the perfect last minute crochet project! And better yet, they use very little yarn.

Attach some string and you also have a super cute ornament!

I made mine with little faces and expressions but I also think they would be adorable just as is! I've even contemplated making one with stripes!

About a month ago I made a goal that every crocheter makes as some point. Not to buy yarn until I use up some of my current stash. Well, it's been a hard one!

Somehow I have more green yarn than I know what to do with. About 5 or 6 skeins worth!

I used some in the Spring to make Mia and Marshall the frog and now I've pulled them out again for these fun mini trees!

My favorite part about them is how fast they work up. It took me about 30 minutes to make each one! Once finished, they are only 6 inches tall!

You could even add a cute little bow (like this one in the mini pig pattern!) or use it to be a bow tie!

• Black crochet/embroidery thread for the eyelashes, mouth and eyebrows

Abbreviations (US Terminology)

SC - Single crochet

SC INC - Single crochet increase

*Slowly stuff as you go, you want it to be firm but not stretched. You will be working in the round, I like using a stitch marker at the beginning of each round.

Let's start crocheting!

Tree

We'll start by crocheting on both sides of a foundation chain to create an oval shape for the tree, you will want to keep your chain fairly tight to help avoid the look of 'holes' on the bottom.

With green, chain 10

Round 1: SC in the 2nd chain from hook, SC in the next 7 chains, 3SC in the last chain; working down the other side of the foundation chain (see picture below), SC in the next 7 chains, completes 2SC in the last chain (which is also the first chain we started with) (20)

Round 2: 2SC in the first st, SC in the next 7 sts, 2SC in each of the next 3 sts, SC in the next 7 sts, 2 SC in each of the last 2 sts (26)

Round 3: 2SC in the first st, SC in the next 10 sts, 2SC in each of the next 3 sts, SC in the next 10 sts, 2SC in the last 2 sts (32)

Round 4: 2SC in the first st, SC in the next 12 sts, 2SC in each of the next 4 sts, SC in the next 12 sts, 2SC in the last 3 sts (40)

Rounds 5-6: SC around (40)

Round 7: SC in the first 8 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (36)

Rounds 8-11: SC around (36)

Round 12: SC in the next 4 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (30)

Round 13: SC around (30)

Here we will add our facial features:

Insert the eyes 3 stitches apart between rounds 12-13. Add cheeks, eyelashes, eyebrows and smile to your liking.

Round 17: SC in the first 2 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (18)

Rounds 18-19: SC around (18)

Round 20: SC in the first st, INV DEC in the next, rep around (12)

Round 21: SC around (12)

Round 22: INV DEC in each st around (6)

*Be sure your tree is fully stuffed, I like to add a little extra before sewing closed. Using the end of your crochet hook will help.*

Fasten off and sew remaining hole closed.

Stump

With brown

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 SC

Round 2: SC INC in each st (12)

Rounds 3-6: SC around (12)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing

Star

Make 2 with yellow

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 5 SC, join with a sl st to the first SC

Round 2: Ch 1, SC INC in each st around, join with a sl st to the first SC (10)

Round 3: Ch 1, *(sl st, DC) into the same st, (DC, sl st) into the next stitch (this creates one point of the star)*, *rep around for a total of 5 points and join with a sl st to the bottom of the first point.

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing

Assembly

1. Sew the stump onto the bottom of the tree, add a little bit of stuffing as you go.

2. Sew the star onto the top of the tree and you are done!

Amigurumi Moose CAL

Are you ready for another CAL? Miles and Millie the Moose are the perfect gift for a little one this Christmas (or even to keep for yourself!). Feel free to make Miles, Millie or both!

A moose has been on my (ever-growing) list of animals I'd like to make for quite some time!

The nose and antlers gave me a challenge as a moose has such a fun shape and unique details. While Miles and Millie may not completely replicate a moose (my husband claims they look like a deer), I had so much fun making them! And I hope you do too!

If you have never participated in a CAL (crochet a long) before you're in for a lot of fun!

What's a CAL (Crochet-a-long)?

It's a fun event where a group of crocheters come together and work on each part of the pattern together. This CAL will be in 3 parts, each being released a few days apart and is FREE here on the blog.

Where does it take place?

The best place is in the Grace and Yarn Crochet Group on Facebook!

With everyone being in different time zones and having different schedules everyone will be crocheting at different times. The group atmosphere allows you to share photos, comments, and questions whenever you'd like!

While the Facebook group is the easiest place to interact with others participating in the CAL, it's not necessary to join. You can also grab a friend to crochet each part together or work on your own as well.

If you prefer to work with an ad-free printable PDF version, one will be available in my Etsy and Ravelry shop starting on Friday!

If you are new to amigurumi this is a great pattern to work on. I will break down each step and provide helpful photos along the way. Feel free to ask questions at any time!

For each moose I used plastic safety eyes which are recommended for children over 3, if you'd prefer you can use crocheted eyes as an alternative.

You're finished moose will measure about 14 inches tall, perfect size for cuddling!

Amigurumi Seal Pup - A Free Crochet Pattern

Happy Friday friends! I'm super excited to share this sweet little seal pup with you!

Funny enough, I have been trying to design a seal since January. It went into time out for a while and the 3rd try finally resembled what I was looking for.

My favorite part of this seal is that the fin, body and head are all made in one piece. There is little sewing involved with this pattern and the final size is only 7 inches tall.

They work up so fast! I'll be using them to stuff stockings along with the mini cow and pig!

*Slowly stuff as you go, you want it to be firm but not stretched. You will be working in the round, I like to use a stitch marker at the beginning of each round. The tail, body and head are made as one piece*

Mouth Piece -

With beige or ivory

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 SC

Round 2: SC INC in each st (12)

Round 3: SC in the first st, SC INC in the next, rep around (18)

Round 4: SC around (18)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing, with black yarn pass through 4 stitches 3-4 times to form the nose.

Cheeks -

Make 2

Create a magic circle with 6 SC, slip stitch to the first SC and pull tight to close the circle. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Tail - 

Make 2 with light brown (we will attach our 2 tail pieces together to then start the body).

Note: I began stuffing at the body and left the tail unstuffed.)

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 SC

Round 2: SC INC in each st (12)

Round 3: SC in the first st, SC INC in the next, rep around (18)

Rounds 4-6: SC around (18)

Round 7: SC in the first st, INV DEC in the next, rep around (12)

Round 8: SC around (12)

Fasten off on the first tail piece, proceed to round 9 after completion of the 2nd tail piece.

Round 9: Here is where we will attach the tail pieces together and start the body. Attach the 2nd piece to the 1st with a SC. SC around the 1st tail and then the 2nd tail (24) This completes your join and is where your next round with start.

Round 10: SC in the first 2 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (18)

Round 11: SC around (18)

Round 12: SC in the first 2 sts, SC INC in the next, rep around (24)

Round 13: SC around (24)

Round 14: SC in the first 3 sts, SC INC in the next, rep around (30)

NOTE: Here is where we will add the facial features. Place the safety eyes 7 stitches apart between rounds 38-39. If you are adding eyelashes I recommend placing them before securing your eyes. Next, sew the mouth piece centered between the eyes adding a small amount of stuffing as you go. Lastly, sew the cheeks onto either side.

Round 41: SC in the first 6 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (42)

Round 42: SC in the first 5 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (36)

Round 43: SC in the first 4 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (30)

Round 44: SC in the first 3 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (24)

*Continue to stuff the head and neck firmly*

Round 45: SC in the first 2 sts, INV DEC in the next, rep around (18)

Round 46: SC in the first st, INV DEC in the next, rep around (12)

Round 47: INV DEC around (6)

Fasten off and sew remaining part closed, weave in your end.

Flippers - 

Make 2 (I left mine unstuffed)

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 SC

Round 2: SC INC in each st (12)

Round 3: SC in the first st, SC INC in the next, rep around (18)

Rounds 4-6: SC around (18)

Round 7: SC in the first st, INV DEC in the next, rep around (12)

Rounds 8-13: SC around (12)

At the end of round 13 pinch the flipper flat and make 6 SC across the top to close, fasten off leaving a long tail to sew onto the body.

Bow (Optional) - 

Working in a magic circle make 4DCs, slip stitch, 4DCs, and slip stitch again. Pull your tail tight to close and wrap the yarn around the middle of the bow 3 times. Tie/secure in the back and cut your yarn leaving a long section to sew with.

Assembly - 

1. Sew the arms onto the body centered with the head at round 25.

2. If you are making the girl version, sew the bow onto the side of your choice.
