Crochet Eyes Tutorial - An Alternative To Plastic Safety Eyes

Hi everyone! I wanted to share today one of my favorite alternatives to plastic safety eyes when making amigurumi. And bonus, they are fast and easy!

These came to be when I was searching for an 'eye' to have a crisp, delicate look.

I have made some with worsted black yarn but it just didn't meet the look I was going for when the eye needed to be on a smaller scale.

There are many reasons we look for an alternative to plastic safety eyes. The most popular reason being the recipient of our beautiful creation is a little one under 3.

I now make most of my amigurumis with plastic safety eyes because my kids are over this age and the fact that they pop in quickly!

With that being said though, I have to admit I love the look of using crochet thread. By the time I'm done, it was worth a few extra minutes. Here's an example from the Amigurumi Cow Pattern!

To make these I used a 2.25mm hook (2.5mm should work just fine too) and size 10 black crochet thread. I also use some white to add a little reflection from time to time for added detail.

I know a lot of you may have embroidery thread/floss on hand and this can be used too, however, it is thicker so you may want to bring it down to 4 ply instead.

On an off note, I absolutely love crochet thread! The beautiful color selection they now come in are amazing! I use them often to make tiny flowers like in these hair clips.

Ok, back on track now...... these eyes work up fast and can be sewn on your amigurumi project before or after you close the head. You can also easily add eyelashes as you sew them on!

I used the 12mm size below for my Cuddly Caterpillar pattern! It was perfect to add a bit of reflection and detail!

Below are instructions for making 4 common sizes found in amigurumi patterns:
9mm, 10.5mm, 12mm and 15mm

Materials-
US Abbreviations-
  • HDC - Half double crochet
  • SC - Single crochet
  • Sl st - Slip stitch
  • MC - Magic circle
  • Ch - Chain
Alright, lets get started!

NOTE: For any of the sizes chosen below, fasten off at the end and be sure to leave a long tail to sew onto your amigurumi project

9mm-

Round 1: Create a MC with 8 HDC, join with a sl st to the first HDC (8 HDC)

10.5mm-

Round 1: Create a MC with 12 HDC, join with a sl st to the first HDC (12 HDC)

12mm-

Round 1: Create a MC with 8 HDC, join with a sl st to the first HDC, Ch 1 (8 HDC)
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch, join with a sl st to the first SC (16 SC)

15mm-

Round 1: Create a MC with 8 HDC, join with a sl st to the first HDC, Ch 1 (8 HDC)
Round 2: 2 HDC in each stitch, join with a sl st to the first HDC (16 HDC)

To add a reflection take a small amount of white crochet thread and pass through a stitch once or twice as pictured below, secure and fasten off.

I told you they would be easy! Be sure to PIN this tutorial to pull it up for a future project you would like to use them on.

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 SC

Round 2: SC INC in each stitch (12)

Round 3: SC in the first stitch, SC INC in the next stitch, repeat around (18)

Round 10: SC in the first 6 stitches, INV DEC 6 times, SC in the last 6 stitches (18)

Change to beige

Rounds 11-24: SC around (18)

Fasten off on the first leg only. At the end of Round 24 on the 2nd leg, complete a SC in each of the next 6 stitches (this will line up your legs to be straight when we join). Round 25 joins the legs together and starts the body.

Round 25: Chain 3 and attach to the first leg with a SC (make sure both of your feet are facing the same direction), SC in the remaining stitches around the leg, when you reach the chain make a SC across each of the 3 chains, SC in the remaining stitches of the next leg and SC across each of the 3 chains (you will have SC on both sides of the 3 chains now) (42 SC) This completes your join and is where your next round will start.

Round 9: SC in the first 7 stitches, SC INC in the next, repeat around (54)

Rounds 10-18: SC around (54)

Note: Here is where we will add the facial features before we start closing the head. Insert the eyes between rows 16 and 17, 8 stitches apart. Place your eyes where you would like them and then remove to embroider your eyelashes before attaching the washer to the back. (This creates a little hole to help see where you want your eyelashes to go)

Nose- Using pink embroidery thread place the nose two rows beneath your eyes and two stitches in on each side (this will leave 4 stitches in the middle and this is what you will pass your thread through to create the nose). Pass your thread through 13 times (or as many as you would like for a thinner or wider nose). Use your thread to make a straight line down 3 rows and then a ‘V’ for the smile, please see the pictures below

*Stuff your head firmly as you go.

Round 25: SC in the first stitch, INV DEC in the next, repeat around (12)

Round 26: INV DEC around (6)

Fasten off and sew remaining part closed, weave in your end

Ears- Make 2

With beige

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 8 SC

Rounds 2-3: SC around (8)

Round 4: SC in the first stitch, SC INC in the next, repeat around (12)

Round 5: SC around (12)

Round 6: SC in the first 2 stitch, SC INC in the next, repeat around (16)

Round 7-15: SC around (16)

Round 16: SC in the first 2 stitches, INV DEC in the next, repeat around (12)

Fold the ears in half as pictured below and SC across the top to close, fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing (this creates a curved ear and will help the ear to remain sturdy, less wobble)

Sew the ears onto the head, placing them evenly apart in line with the eyes. I started at the 3rd row and finished at the 6th row.

Flowers- Make 3

Make a magic circle, complete the following inside: 2 DC, slip stitch (this completes one petal, repeat 4 more times for a total of 5 petals)

Pull the circle tight and slip stitch to the first petal to close, fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. Attach to the ear of your choice.

Dress-

To work the dress, have your bunny’s body towards you and feet away from you (see pictures for example). We will work around starting with the bottom layer first:

With orchid create a slip knot and attach with a slip stitch to one of the front loops from round 28 (For a cleaner look attach at the back of the body).

Round 1: Ch 1, DC in the same stitch and in each stitch around, join with a slip stitch to the first DC (42)

Round 2: Ch 1, *1 DC in the same stitch, DC INC in the next*, *repeat around (63)

Round 3: Ch 1, 1 DC in the same stitch and in each stitch around, join with a slip stitch to the first DC (63)

Fasten off and weave in end.

Top Layer-

As we did above create a slip knot and attach with a slip stitch to one of the front loops from round 30.

(NOTE: For this layer the first two round will be done in HDC and the 3rd round will go back to DC).

Round 1: Ch 1, HDC in the same stitch and in each stitch around, join with a slip stitch to the first HDC (42)

Round 2: Ch 1, *1 HDC in the same stich, HDC INC in the next*, *repeat around (63)

Round 3: Ch 1, 1 DC in the same stitch and in each stitch around, join with a slip stitch to the first DC (63)

Fasten off and weave in end .

Arms- Make 2

*Lightly stuff the bottom of the arms only*

With beige

Round 1: Create a magic circle with 6 SC

Round 2: SC INC in each stitch around (12)

Round 3: SC in the first 3 stitches, SC INC, repeat around (15)

Rounds 4-5: SC around (15)

Round 6: SC in the first stitch, INV DEC, repeat around (10)

Rounds 7-20: SC around (10)

At the end of round 20 pinch the arm flat and make 5 SC across the top to close, fasten off and leave a long tail to sew onto the body.

Dress Straps- Make 2

With orchid chain 11

Row 1: HDC in the 2nd chain from hook and in each chain across (10)

Row 2: Chain 1 and turn, HDC in each chain across (10)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Attaching everything together-

1. Sew the head onto the body, making sure to have the facial features centered. Add more stuffing as you go to make it firm and less wobbly.

2. Next sew the arms onto the body centered with the head at row 44.

3. Sew your straps on over the arms, starting and ending at row 44 on each side.

1. Sew the head onto the body, making sure to have the facial features centered. Add more stuffing as you go to make it firm and less wobbly.

2. Next, sew the arms onto the body centered with the head at row 44.

Two options can be done with the suspenders, they can be only sewn onto front and back of row 31 (meaning they can hang down if wanted) or they can be sewn along the body so they will stay in place.

4. Lastly, attach your bow tie.

Crochet Bunny Headband - A Free Pattern

I am so ready for Spring to be here and with Easter around the corner, these headbands are perfect for both!

These work up fast (I feel I say that on EVERY pattern I make, but that is probably because I like patterns that I can have done fairly quickly). It's my go to!

To make a bunny headband you will need a 1-inch wide headband (don't worry if you have a wider or narrower one, we can adjust).

I found the ones I used at Walmart in the girls' department, they came in a 6-pack for only $3!

The best thing about this headband is that it uses hardly any yarn and is a great way to work through your scrap stash.

This would be a sweet gift or item at a craft fair and pairs well with the Berry Patch Bunny!

Materials-

  • Worsted weight (size 4) yarn in color of your choice for the bunny and flowers
  • 3.5 mm and 5.00 mm crochet hook (these are my favorite brand of hooks!)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Headband- I used a 1-inch wide headband (I will give instructions on how to alter if you have a different size on hand)

US Abbreviations-

MC- Magic circle

SC- Single crochet

SC INC- SC increase

INV DEC- Invisible decrease

DC- Double crochet

Sl st- Slip stitch

Let's hop to it!

Headband- With 3.5 mm hook

To start the headband make a magic circle with 10 SC, pull tight to close. You will want to tie a knot to secure your magic circle, this will prevent it from coming open once the headband is placed inside. We will be working in a continuous round without joining.

Rounds 1-70: SC around (10 SC)

We are making a tube to insert the headband into. If you have a wider or narrower headband adjust the number of SC in the magic circle accordingly. Example, if your headband is wider try 12 SC, if your headband in narrower try 8 SC.

We all crochet with a different tension, while my tube needed to be 70 rows to cover my headband yours may need less or more. Feel free to test it out from time to time to see how it fits!

When your tube is long enough insert your headband and sew closed. This is very similar to closing a hat or amigurumi. Weave your tapestry needle in and out of the stitches until you reach where you started, pull tight to close the circle and secure.

Ears- Make 2

With 3.5 mm hook

Round 1: Make a magic circle with 8 SC

Round 2: SC around (8 SC)

Round 3: SC in the first stitch and SC INC in the next, repeat around (12 SC)

Rounds 4-6: SC around (12 SC)

Round 7: SC in the first 2 stitches, SC INC in the next, repeat around (16 SC)

Round 8: SC around (16 SC)

Round 9: SC in the first 3 stitches, SC INC in the next, repeat around (20 SC)

Rounds 10-21 SC around (20 SC)

Fold your ear in half and SC across the top (this will help keep the ears from flopping forward or backward)

Sew both ears onto the headband evenly apart as pictured below. Use the SC across the top to sew through on each side. I also sewed up into the ear and back down twice on each side of each ear, keeping the stitch on the inside so it's not noticeable.

The roses for this headband are from my Easy Crochet Rose Tutorial (which comes as a right and left handed tutorial). We will be using the small rose.

Small Rose- Make 3

With 5.00 mm hook

Chain 24

Row 1: DC in the 2nd chain from hook, ch 1, DC in the same chain, ch 1, skip the next chain, *V-stitch in the next chain, ch 1, and skip the next chain* Repeat this through to the end of the chain, ending with a V-stitch. You will have 12 V-stitches and 11 chain 1 spaces in-between

Row 2: Chain 1 and turn, complete 5 DCs in the first V-stitch (this is your first petal), slip stitch into the chain 1 space, *repeat 5 DCs in the V-stitches and slip stitch into the chain 1 spaces for a total of 5 petals, complete the next 5 petals with 4 DCs each and slip stitch in between, the last 2 petals with have 3 DCs in each

Fasten off leaving a long tail to sew it together

Starting with the side having the long tail, start to roll your petals together into a circle as pictured below, with your needle push through the first petal to the bottom of the flower. Then sew through each layer back and forth to secure each of the petals in place, fasten off

Your small rose is done, now you only need 2 more!

Sew your flowers onto the headband. I started with the middle and aligned the others right next to it on either side.

Whew! We're done! I hope you and your little one(s) enjoy this fun Spring headband as much as I did! Feel free to share pictures with us on Facebook, we'd love to see them!

Thank you for visiting,

Stephanie
